Getting to Ulaanbaatar

we can provide information which should help get you to Ulaanbaatar, but we do not currently arrange flights ourselves. There are various routes depending on which part of the world you are starting from. If you are in the UK we suggest contacting Adam at Trailfinders (adaml@trailfinders.com) as a first step (mention us), or your own local travel agent. The internet is not always a good option for flights to Mongolia, but specials do sometimes appear

Please note that for all trips Day 1 is the day before we depart Ulaanbaatar. You can arrive in Ulaanbaatar on Day 1. The final day of the trip is the day after we arrive back in Ulaanbaatar. You can plan to depart Mongolia on the final day, or stay an extra day or two and see more of Ulaanbaatar.

The main options are to fly via Moscow, Beijing or Seoul. There are frequent flights to these major hubs, but it is the next leg on to Ulaanbaatar which is more of a challenge. Both AirChina and MIAT (Mongolia's national airline) fly this route.
An interesting alternative, if you have the time, is to take the Trans-Siberian express from Moscow to Ulaanbaatar. It takes five days, and you’ll need a good book and lots of snacks. We can give you plenty of survival tips. Even better would be to stop off and see more of Russia than just endless forest from the window. There are various companies that will organise a ticket for you, such as Waytorussia. They also have info on Russian visas. If you don’t fancy organising things yourself, there are several companies that can do it for you, at a price. If five days on a train is a bit too daunting, how about a day and a half from Beijing to Ulaanbaatar? This is a comfortable and relatively inexpensive trip.

This is just a general introduction to how to get to Mongolia. Please do get in touch if you have questions or are having trouble finding flights at a reasonable price.
